Dear Artsy Craftsy Friends,
Welcome to yet another pattern for a fancy stitch. We know that Halloween has already passed, but even so, adding a new stitch to your crochet dictionary is always a bonus. Today’s written instructions will show you how to crochet the spider stitch. You can use it to crochet scarves, cardigans, sweaters, even ponchos, etc.
You can take a look at the image bellow to see how the spider stitch looks like:
Abbreviations:
ch– chain
ch- – chain from previous row
sc– single crochet stitch
dc– double crochet stitch
tr– triple crochet stitch
Level: beginner-intermediate.
Tip: The spider stitch is mostly based on the triple crochet stitch. Working this stitch requires you to keep a steady tension, so that the swatch will look even. Otherwise, the spiders will turn out messy.
Work a loose chain from multiples of 14 plus 2 extra chains to complete the pattern.
Row 1: 1dc in the 6th ch from the hook; * ch1; skip next ch from foundation ch; 1dc in next ch * ; repeat from * to * ; ch4 to return (counts as a dc + ch1sp here and throughout).
Row 2: 1dc in the 2nd dc from previous row; * ch3; 1tr in each of next 4dc from previous row; ch3; 1dc in next dc; ch1; 1dc in next dc * ; repeat from * to * ; ch4 to return.
Row 3: 1dc in 2nd dc from previous row; * ch3; 1sc in each of next 4tr; ch3; 1dc in next dc; ch1; 1dc in next dc * ; repeat from * to * ; ch4 to return.
Row 4: 1dc in 2nd dc from previous row; * ch3; 1sc in each of next 4sc; ch3; 1dc in next dc; ch1; 1dc in next dc * ; repeat from * to * ; ch4 to return.
Row 5: repeat row 4.
Row 6: 1dc in next 2nd dc from previous row; * ch1; 1tr in 1st sc; ch1; 1tr in 2nd sc; ch1; 1tr in 3rd sc; ch1; 1tr in 4th sc; ch1; 1dc in next dc; ch1; 1dc in next dc * ; repeat from * to * ; ch4 to return.
Row 7: 1dc in 2nd dc from previous row; * ch1; 1dc in 1st tr; ch1; 1dc in 2nd tr; ch1; 1dc in 3rd tr; ch1; 1dc in 4th tr; ch1; 1dc in next dc; ch1; 1dc in next dc * ; repeat from * to * ; ch4 to return.
Repeat rows 2-7 to compete the pattern.

Hi I really like your tutorial. but the type of yarn you used was hard foe me to see. sorry but I will use your tutorial because your very good .
I have tried this stitch with 5 multiples of 14 + 2 (72 st). After several starts and restarts, I absolutely cannot make it come out correctly. I end up with an extra dc and the turning ch. Can you offer any suggestion?
I really want to make a shawl.
Thanks so much for any help.
Hi, Paula. The video tutorial shows exactly where to insert the hook in. It sounds like you are miscounting the number of chains on the foundation chain. A lot of people have the tendency to do just that right at the beginning, when they have to skip 3,4,5 chains. If you continue counting an extra chain at the end of the row, leave it unworked. You can sew the loose ends afterwards. Otherwise, please follow the instructions. Keep up the good work.
I will make something wonderful and tell you how it comes out – I know that the folks in the elderly homes will love a lap blanket – especially the gentlemen – they don’t usually use shawls – they do like their knees warm – thanks for the patterns – Mary
This is a lovely pattern, but there is something wrong with the foundation chain. I’ve tried the multiples of 14 +2 but that didn’t quite make it for me. According to other similar patterns it is normally done by multiples of 18 + 6.
It can be still done with the multplies of 14 + 2, but need to alter the spiders in between from 4 lots of triple crochet to 3 lots of triple crochet instead.
