Dear crafters,
Knowing how to crochet the triple crochet stitch is a must while learning how to crochet. The triple crochet stitch is one of the most basic stitches, along the single crochet stitch, the double crochet stitch and the half double crochet stitch. The triple crochet stitch is the most elongated stitch, besides the quadruple crochet stitch. YES! There is something such as the quadruple crochet stitch which is yet another basic stitch. Many crochet paterns are based on these basic stitches, despite the fact that they look fancy and very complicated. So now let us give you the baby steps on how to crochet the triple crochet stitch, also known as the treble crochet stitch. This stitch is usualy abbreviated tc or tbc or even trc.
Instructions on how to crochet the triple/treble crochet stitch:
Make a foundation chain of a desired number of chains at your choice. The triple crochet stitch does not require a multiple of chains when executed. This only depends on the patterns you are following which may ask you to respect a specific number of chains to complete the respective pattern. However, if you wish to practice a small sample of triple crochet stitches, then chain 23. This will give you a number of 20 triple crochet stitches on each row, as follows:
Skip the first 4 chains from the hook (they will count as a triple crochet stitch here and throughout); yarn over hook twice (now you have 3 loops on your hook); insert your hook in the 5th chain from the hook, yarn over hook once and pull the yarn through (now you have 4 loops on your hook); yarn over hook once and pull the yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook (now you have 3 loops on your hook); yarn over once and pull the yarn through the following 2 loops on your hook (now you have 2 loops on your hook); yarn over hook one last time and pull the yarn through these last 2 loops on your hook to complete a triple crochet stitch!
Let„s repeat these steps in order to make more triple/treble crochet stitches on the first row and on the following rows: *yarn over hook twice (now you have 3 loops on your hook); insert your hook in the next chain, yarn over hook once and pull the yarn through (now you have 4 loops on your hook); yarn over hook once and pull the yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook (now you have 3 loops on your hook); yarn over once and pull the yarn through the following 2 loops on your hook (now you have 2 loops on your hook); yarn over hook one last time and pull the yarn through these last 2 loops on your hook to complete a triple crochet stitch.*
Repeat from * to * in order to make more triple crochet stitches across the first row. Now let us give you the steps on how to continue to the next rows. When the last triple crochet stitch on the first row is completed, chain 4 and turn your work on the other side (do not forget that this chain-4 counts as a triple crochet stitch at the beginning of each row); skip the last executed triple crochet stitch from the previous row; in top of the following stitch from the previous row repeat the instructions given from * to *; repeat these steps across the row.
However, to finish this second row and the following rows you need to make sure that you work the last triple crochet stitch in the right place; please, take notice of the fact that the last stitch on this row is the beginning chain-4 from the previous row; to make the last triple crochet stitch in top of this chain-4 do as follows: yarn over hook twice as usual and insert your hook in top chain of this beginning chain-4, then pull the yarn through it; continue executing the triple crochet stitch as usual.
If you wish to practice more treble crochet stitches, then you need to repeat this row as many times as you desire. Take notice of the fact that the edges of your work look somehow messy because of the beginning chain-4s needed when turning the project on the other side at the end of each row. Do not let this ugly edges put you off! Many patterns will give detailed instructions on how to cover these edges by adding beautiful borders. Our written instructions are only meant to teach you the baby steps on how to crochet this basic crochet stitch! We sureely hope our instructions were helpful!
