Dear Artsy Craftsy friends,
Have you ever looked at a lacey poncho or a lacey shawl and wondered “What stitch is used for this pattern?” It’s none other than the good old lace and variations of this stitch. The following written instructions will explain how to crochet the basic lace.
Let’s start with the explanation.
Abbreviations:
ch – chain;
ch- – refers to chain previously made;
ch-sp – chain space;
dc – double crochet;
sc – single crochet.
Level: beginner.
Tip: The lace will look better and tighter if you use finer yarn and a smaller sized crochet hook.
Make a loose chain of multiple of 4 plus 2 extra chains to complete the pattern.
Row 1: 1sc in 2nd ch from the hook; * ch5; skip next ch3 from the foundation ch; 1sc in next ch * ; repeat from * to * ; ch5 to turn.
Row 2: 1sc in first ch5sp; * ch5; 1sc in next ch5sp * ; repeat from * to * ; to finish the row: ch2; 1dc in last sc from previous row; ch1 to turn.
Row 3: 1sc in first dc from previous row; * ch5; 1sc in next ch5sp * ; repeat from * to * ; to finish the row: 1sc in last ch5sp; ch5 to turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 to complete the pattern.
That’s pretty much all with the basic lace stitch, so simple, yet, so fancy. I am sure many of you will want a pattern using this stitch, but, most of you already know, I, Cătălina, am currently unable to see. So, working on a pattern is a little difficult. However, I am passing the knowledge to my mom and sister and to you through this website.
As usual, if you prefer video instructions more, you can watch the one below.
Happy lacing,

How do you start the mesh to make a pointed shawl.
I haven’t tried making one using this stitch, but I believe you could decrease the size of the shawl by not working the edges. I think you should try making the shawl from top to bottom, from the base of the triangle (the wide part) to pointy part. I’m sorry I can’t help you more.
How do you increase or decrease this pattern?
I apologize. I haven’t written about increasing or decreasing this stitch. When I’ll make the time to try it out and share my knowledge.
I appreciate your teaching methods so much. I am just getting back into crocheting and I don’t remember very much but you are a great teacher. Thank so much for being so willing to help others like me learn. God bless you and your family in all you do.
Hi Catalina I’m so excited to get started on a project using this lace pattern. Thank you for sharing it, and I hope your sight improves soon as that must be so hard for you. Debs 🙂
I just stumbled onto your page. I just hope that you are doing better from 2013.
Barbara
Good Morning,
When finishing the 1st row you added 2 sc.
On the second row we added 2 SC at the other end
On the 3rd row I no not see the same procedure?
My net is not square?
Hi, there. I am not sure where exactly you say I added 2sc anywhere in my pattern. What is going wrong with what you are doing? I’ve used these instructions to make an extra large blanket for a king sized bed, which turned out great. Please follow the steps to the point to get it right. Do not worry about the edges. They usually look slightly ugly when the pattern is a lacey one.
Jim, I’m not sure if you solved your problem. I understand your confusion. I would suggest you watch the tutorial. There is also a double crochet along with the 2 sc. Good luck. js
How do I do the last row so it is as straight as the first edge? Thank you for the video and instructions!
THANK YOU FOE THIS LESSON. I MADE THIS SOMETIME AGO AND LOST THE PATTERN. I USED IT TO ATTACH TO A BRA WHEN WEARING LOWER CUT GARMENTS. I HAVE RECIEVED COMPLIMENTS AND REQUESTS . GOD BLESS YOU
Hello there! It is very pleasant to find that these old patterns and instructions are still helpful, it makes me very happy to know! Keep up the good work and hope you find more inspiration in my old patterns! Thank you. God bless!
